Student-made glossary assignment for MATLAB syntax¶
Element · All elements
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
A homework intervention in which students complete a five-column glossary form: "syntax, overview of the syntax, student developed test case(s) based on instructor guidelines, hand computations to predict results of test cases, and MATLAB results". Column complexity follows a hierarchical analysis of intellectual skills (discrimination, concepts, rules), letting students build a schema and gain a sense of accomplishment on smaller parts of the learning task before solving application problems.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Students complete the glossary before working on application problems, with items tied to immediate assignments
Constraints¶
- Implemented only in the last quarter of the semester, late relative to the pre-motivational survey
Target Learners¶
- first-year engineering students
Target Learning Goals¶
- learning and transferring MATLAB syntax to engineering problem-solving
