Description¶
The studied SCMD environment was a Web-based chat system with a top pane displaying messages chronologically with ordinal numbers and authors' names, and a bottom pane for composing messages. Unlike instant messaging programs, it "did not provide any functionality of noticing if others were composing their message currently." Across 13 sessions the group produced 82 to 158 messages per session, averaging 129.4 utterances per session.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A Web-based chat interface with persistent, scrollable message history; participants must hit enter or return to post
Constraints¶
- The computer lab was configured for individual work rather than small-group collaboration, and keyboard and other sounds were somewhat distracting
Target Learners¶
- doctoral and master's students in education
Target Learning Goals¶
- discussion of weekly readings on writing and composition theory
