Description¶
YOUmedia online is a closed social networking site built on the Remix World platform, accessible 24 hours a day, where teens create personal pages, join groups, post and comment on multimedia, and message peers. Unlike other social networks, it was designed with explicit pedagogical and motivational purposes, intentionally using "culture, context, and expectations" to promote learning. Teens earn virtual currency called Remix dollars as rewards for posting original content and feedback, redeemable for items such as flash drives, gift cards, iPods, and synthesizers.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teens must complete a registration form to participate online; the incentive system depends on rewards for posting original content and feedback on others' work.
Constraints¶
- In Year 1 the research team had limited access to log-in data from the online site, and the online space was not well utilized.
Target Learners¶
- High school-aged teens
Target Learning Goals¶
- Media production
- Peer critique
- Collaboration
