Description

An expert-rated, video-based performance assessment adapted by Emergency Medicine researchers to score medical residents' crisis-resource-management leadership and communication on anchored ordinal scales.

Components

  • Adapted Ottawa Global Rating Scale scoring team leaders' leadership and communication: The Ottawa Global Rating Scale (GRS) is the expert-rating instrument used to score team leaders' CRM performance on video. The original scale divides CRM skills into five categories including "problem solving, situational awareness, leadership, resource utilization, and communication", each on a 7-point anchored ordinal scale from novice (1) to experienced physician (7). The research team adapted it by removing categories not aligned with the leadership-and-communication learning objectives, supported by Kane's validity framework, and two Emergency Medicine physicians scored each video, reaching perfect agreement after negotiation (Cohen's Kappa 0.77 before negotiation).
