Description¶
Connect with Kids is a character-education curriculum developed for elementary and secondary students that uses peer-story videos, lessons, activities, and schoolwide and community outreach to promote prosocial attitudes and positive behavior.
Components¶
- Connect with Kids character education program (videos, lesson plans, website, and outreach components): Connect with Kids is a character education curriculum for elementary (grades 3–5) and secondary (grades 6–12) students that "aims to promote prosocial attitudes and positive behavior" by teaching core character values. Lessons combine peer-to-peer videos based on real children's stories with story summaries, discussion questions, student activities, and vocabulary, reinforced by a website component and schoolwide and community outreach. The elementary program has eight units with 48 student activities; the middle/high school program has 36 lessons introducing 26 character traits with 104 student activities. (What Works Clearinghouse (2006))
- Connect with Kids lesson sequence: trait introduction, video, teacher-led discussion, and delayed follow-up activity: Each Connect with Kids lesson follows a recurring instructional sequence: "Each lesson begins with an introduction of the trait being taught followed by the Connect with Kids video for that trait." The video is followed by teacher-led discussion using questions from the teacher resource guide, and one to two weeks later a follow-up activity in which students practice and demonstrate behaviors associated with the trait through cooperative learning exercises. Video dosage differs by level: three video segments per trait in the middle/high school program and one video per trait in the elementary program. (What Works Clearinghouse (2006))
