Description¶
A Digital Promise certification initiative in which edtech companies submit evidence for expert review and qualifying products receive time-limited Open Badges signaling areas such as research-based design, learner variability, and interoperability.
Components¶
- Digital Promise Product Certifications ecosystem: Product Certifications are "competency- and evidence-based signals" giving districts an independent overview of edtech quality. Product teams apply by submitting evidence; expert assessors at nonprofit organizations review submissions, and successful products earn an Open Badge. As of May 31, 2023, 162 certifications had been awarded across Research-Based Design (77), Learner Variability (34), Project Unicorn Interoperability (45), and others. Certifications expire every two years to confirm products still meet requirements as tools update. (Select the Right Edtech: How to Leverage Certified Products During the Procurement Process)
Claims¶
- Districts report recurring pain points in edtech evaluation, including no formal process, curriculum–technology team disconnects, uneven evaluation depth, and outdated tool inventories [+W]
- Without clear quality signals, district boards default to the lowest bid when comparing edtech products [+W]
