Description¶
Duolingo is a language-learning software platform operated by Duolingo, Inc., offering courses, practice activities, and community discussion boards across many languages.
Components¶
- Duolingo asynchronous discussion boards: Duolingo connects learners through asynchronous discussion boards attached to each lesson in each of over 38 language courses, where users "can come together to problem-solve vocabulary and grammar issues, troubleshoot technical aspects of the program, and discuss additional resources for language content." A single board may stay active for years, and users include average users, plus users, and volunteer moderators who answer questions more reliably. During the pandemic the boards also carried social-emotional exchanges such as gifting lingots to healthcare workers. (Neuschafer (2022))
- Duolingo AI-mediated language learning platform used to deliver personalized EFL instruction: Duolingo served as the AI-mediated instructional platform for the experimental group over a 10-week intervention. Learners had access to "interactive exercises, online quizzes, language games, and real-time feedback tailored to their individual performance on the platform", with at least 2 hours per week of supplementary out-of-class use. The control group received traditional instruction with textbooks, lectures, grammar drills, and writing exercises for the same duration. Interview participants described the platform as engaging, adaptive to their pace, and convenient for practice anywhere. (Wei L (2023))
