Description¶
Equatio is Texthelp's digital mathematics equation editor and accessibility tool, while Mathspace is a digital workspace for working with equations, shapes, and freehand drawings; teachers and students use them in mathematics instruction.
Components¶
- Equatio digital math tool with Mathspace: Equatio is Texthelp's advanced equation editor for digital mathematics environments. The report describes that "it includes features such as a Desmos graphing integration, handwriting recognition, language translation, and a screenshot reader with the ability to quickly and easily copy and paste math without losing formatting," plus Mathspace, "a digital space where learners can work freely with equations, shapes, and freehand drawings." The study examined how teachers use these features to support UDL principles in grades 4-12 mathematics, finding the tool versatile for both teacher authoring and student expression. (McMahon et al. (2024))
Claims¶
- Teachers described Equatio as a time-saver for creating instructional materials, with 42% of survey respondents strongly agreeing it saves them time [+W]
- Most Equatio-using teachers were not using the tool to support UDL-based practices, with only about 22% reporting use of a given UDL affordance on average [-W]
- Mathspace dynamic representations, such as fraction smart shapes, let students see how changing the number of equal parts alters part size while the whole stays the same [+W]
- After focus-group professional learning, all nine teacher partners committed to trying Mathspace and reported broader, more integrated uses of Equatio [+W]
- When all of a teacher's students had access to Equatio, teachers leveraged it in more robust workflows such as assessments, digital submissions, and timely feedback [+W]
