Description¶
Gephi is an open-source network analysis and visualization platform developed and maintained by the Gephi community and contributors.
Components¶
- Gephi network visualization tool for controversy mapping in classrooms: Gephi is "an interactive visualization and exploration tool for all kinds of networks" used by students to render hyperlinked website corpora as network maps. It displays nodes as websites and edges as hyperlinks, showing "the relative centrality of a website in relation to a particular issue" through size (inbound links), position (edge quantity), and color attributes that update in real time as students rank, filter, and colorize nodes. (Solli et al. (2018))
Claims¶
- Students orient to visually prominent nodes (large, central) when beginning to categorize actors on a controversy map [+M]
- The software's content-blind structure makes important controversy actors difficult to find, prompting students to repurpose tool features to the task [~M]
