Description¶
The Hour of Code is a Code.org initiative offering one-hour introductory computer-science activities for K–12 students and implemented by schools and other participating organizations.
Components¶
- Code.org's Hour of Code as the ignition point of the modern coding movement: The paper describes Hour of Code, introduced in 2013 by the nonprofit Code.org, as "a one-hour introduction to computer science for K-12 students" that ignited the modern coding movement. With effective marketing, a simple point of access, and a workforce-development narrative, it engaged computer science educators, education leaders, teachers, nonprofits, policymakers, and employers. The paper situates it in a lineage from Papert's Logo and constructionism to Scratch, and notes Code.org's mission emphasizes expanding access and participation by women and underrepresented minorities.
