Description¶
A commercial scratch-and-reveal multiple-choice assessment form made by Epstein Educational Enterprises that provides immediate item-level correctness feedback and supports partial-credit scoring.
Components¶
- IF-AT (Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique) scratch-and-reveal answer-until-correct form: The IF-AT is a commercially-available "scratch-and-reveal"-type MC answer form: rows of boxes coated in opaque waxy covering, one keyed answer marked by a black star per question. Students scratch their chosen option; a star confirms correctness, while no star signals an incorrect choice and the student keeps scratching until the star is revealed — an answer-until-correct technique. This gives item-by-item feedback during the exam, enables self-tallying of scores, and supports partial-credit marking schemes without extra instructor resources. (Slepkov (2013))
Claims¶
- IF-AT exam scores correlate with constructed-response quiz scores (r = 0.67), supporting validity [+M]
- IF-AT-scored physics midterm and final exams yield good test reliability (α = 0.71 and 0.82; α50 = 0.86 and 0.90) [+W]
- Partial credit accounts for only a small proportion of IF-AT exam scores, though weaker students depend on it more [+W]
- Polychotomously scored IF-AT physics exam items show excellent discrimination, with a mean item-total correlation of r′ = 0.41 ± 0.13 across 45 items [+M]
- Partial credit under the IF-AT is granted in a discriminating manner: top final-exam scorers earned 65% ± 23% of available partial credit versus 39% ± 10% for bottom scorers [+M]
