Description¶
A preschool curriculum package for three- to five-year-old children that integrates oral language, emergent literacy, mathematics, science, general knowledge, and socioemotional development through thematic units and daily group activities.
Components¶
- Literacy Express preschool curriculum: Literacy Express is a preschool curriculum for three- to five-year-old children "structured around units on oral language, emergent literacy, basic math, science, general knowledge, and socioemotional development." It includes daily individual, small-group, and large-group activities, with three brief daily small-group activities (dialogic reading, phonological awareness, and print knowledge) for groups of three to five children. The package includes a teacher's manual, 10 thematic unit guides, more than 80 thematically linked picture and alphabet books, and phonological awareness activity picture cards, at a cost of $2,300 per classroom package. - Literacy Express professional development model: The Literacy Express implementation model pairs the curriculum with structured teacher professional development. In the standard package, "Teachers participate in a two-day professional development workshop at the beginning of the school year and in either two additional half-day workshops or one additional full-day workshop." In the Lonigan et al. (2005) trial, one intervention arm added regular classroom visits by trained project teacher-mentors on top of the workshops, and workshops included both teacher-directed and hands-on components.
