Description¶
Math Corps is an intensive summer mathematics camp for middle school students founded and operated by Wayne State University, with replication sites supported through NSF funding.
Components¶
- Math Corps summer camp program: Math Corps is an intensive summer camp for middle school students, founded at Wayne State University by Steven Kahn and Leonard Boehm nearly 30 years ago. It "provides not only that emotional and social support, but also high-quality math instruction," leveraging its founders' backgrounds as math teachers. In 2015 NSF funded replication of the camp in three cities, with Mathematica conducting an independent study. (Barbara Harris (2021))
- Math Corps summer program for Detroit middle school students: Math Corps is an intensive summer program for middle school students in Detroit, started approximately 30 years ago by Steven Kahn and Leonard Boehm at Wayne State University. The educators "leveraged their backgrounds as math teachers to create an intensive summer program" that combines high-quality math instruction with mentoring and positive influences. The program was studied under a 2015 National Science Foundation Advancing Informal STEM Learning grant, with Mathematica conducting an independent evaluation of students who attended from 2004 to 2009. (Barbara Harris (2022))
- Math Corps tutoring program: Math Corps is a grade 4-8 tutoring program in which full-time AmeriCorps tutors serve approximately 25 students and part-time tutors 12-15 students, each receiving "90 minutes of intervention support per week" in 30- or 45-minute sessions two or three times weekly. Tutoring is curriculum neutral, aligned to grade-level state and national standards, and targets foundational skills in whole and rational numbers, operations, and algebraic reasoning. Students exit when assessment data indicate they meet exit eligibility and are then monitored until year end. (Math Corps Program Description (2024))
