Description

A Chicago Public Schools initiative that places adult monitors along predetermined routes to help students travel safely to and from designated schools.

Components

  • Safe Passage program expansion with adult monitors along routes to designated welcoming schools: The Safe Passage program, already active in 35 high schools and four elementary school communities, was expanded to include new routes near designated welcoming schools after the 2013 closings. CPS spent an additional $7.7 million to hire 600 more Safe Passage workers to "stand along and patrol predetermined routes in areas where schools were closed," with the goals of reducing students' likelihood of becoming victims of violent incidents and creating a safe, supportive school environment. CPS mailed Safe Passage maps to every displaced student and posted routes online. (de la Torre et al. (2015))
