Description¶
Scratch is an MIT Media Lab-developed block-based programming language and online sharing ecosystem in which learners create, remix, debug, and share interactive projects.
Components¶
- Scratch block-based programming language and sharing ecosystem: Scratch, developed at MIT's Media Lab through a series of NSF-funded projects, is "a block-based graphical programming language originally designed to help novices, including even young children, learn the basics of computer programming." Its low floor, high ceiling design lets users write scripts that result in animations easily while progressing to more complex computational ideas such as sequences, loops, modularizing, and iterating. Beyond the language, Scratch is an ecosystem where participants share what they have built, study examples from advanced users, and develop practices such as remixing and debugging. The report states the user base has grown to become an international communit (Roschelle et al. (2017))
