Description¶
Simucase is a clinical simulation platform developed and operated by Simucase for speech-language pathology, audiology, and occupational therapy education.
Components¶
- Simucase computer-based clinical simulation platform: Simucase is a computer-based simulation platform that "allows students to complete clinical assignments independently and asynchronously from the clinic or course experience," covering speech-language pathology, audiology, and occupational therapy. Members access part-task trainers, assessments, and intervention sessions, working through case history, collaboration, hypothesis formation, assessment administration, diagnosis, and recommendations in learning mode (with feedback and unlimited practice) or assessment mode (no feedback). Students must score 90% or greater for minutes to count toward ASHA clinical clock hours. (Elliott et al. (2021))
Claims¶
- Students report increased confidence in selecting, administering, scoring, and interpreting assessments after a simulated clinical course [+W]
- Students find computer-based simulation feedback insufficient because incorrect responses are marked without explanation [-W]
- In a qualitative pilot with 10 speech-language pathology graduate students, most felt the Simucase assessment cases lacked authenticity because they included too few behavioral modifications [-W]
- Students recommend integrating computer-based simulation cases into each course to make learning more concrete [+W]
- Graduate SLP students perceive the learning mode of computer-based simulation as highly beneficial because it allows unlimited attempts without grade penalty [+W]
- Simulation Based Education Improves Outcomes [+M]
