Description¶
A SocioPatterns wearable RFID proximity-sensing system that records face-to-face contact durations between participants for collaboration and network analysis.
Components¶
- SocioPatterns RFID badges for measuring face-to-face contact duration: SocioPatterns RFID devices were integrated into participants' name badges to measure face-to-face contact during scientific events. The badges perform "bidirectional low-power radio communication": because the body shields the radio frequency and badges are worn on the chest, they exchange packets only when wearers face each other at close range at about 1 to 1.5 m. Data at 20-second temporal resolution were aggregated to one variable, duration of interaction, per dyad across the whole event. (Eberle et al. (2021))
Claims¶
- Face-to-face contact durations at scientific events follow a heavy-tailed distribution, with 20-second contacts most common [+W]
- Longer face-to-face contact during a scientific event increases the likelihood that a researcher selects the other as a new potential collaboration partner [+W]
