Description

SSL is a structured early-literacy intervention programme whose developers provide lessons using modelling, guided practice, progress monitoring, and reteaching.

Components

  • Model-lead-test lesson format with progress monitoring and re-teaching: Each SSL lesson sequences four to six activities and follows a model-lead-test format: "The teacher first models the target skill. Students replicate the example and practice the skill with assistance from the teacher." Teachers then monitor student progress and re-teach skills to students who do not fully master them, and lessons can be repeated to support mastery. Each lesson begins with a set of nursery rhymes before the sequenced instructional activities. (What Works Clearinghouse (2007))
