Description

The TEEMSS sound unit test is a nine-item, standards-aligned science assessment developed by the TEEMSS researchers to measure elementary and middle school students' understanding of sound before and after instruction.

Components

  • Sound unit test outcome measure for the TEEMSS evaluation: The sound unit test was developed by the researchers and "designed to align with the TEEMSS curriculum and science education standards." It consists of nine items (three multiple-choice and six constructed-response) with 21 points possible. The eight unit tests used in the study drew items from 12 standardized tests, including NAEP and TIMSS, as well as regional and state tests. Interrater reliability was 74% on pretests and 76% on posttests. The pretest was given before teaching the unit and the posttest upon completion, with the posttest differing slightly in response-option order and prompt values.
