Description¶
The Wilson Reading System is a structured literacy curriculum developed by Wilson Language Training for teaching decoding, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and related reading skills to learners with word-level reading difficulties.
Components¶
- Daily 10-part lesson plan in three instructional blocks with built-in review: The Wilson Reading System organizes each lesson into "a daily 10-part lesson plan that builds on interaction between the teacher and student," divided into three blocks: parts one through five emphasize word study, parts six through eight emphasize spelling, and parts nine and 10 emphasize fluency and comprehension. The program sequences word-structure instruction from basic word skills to more complex language structure including morphological principles, with reviews reinforcing previous lessons. Lessons run 45–90 minutes in reading classes, small groups, or tutorials. (What Works Clearinghouse (2007))
Claims¶
- The Wilson Reading System shows no discernible effects on reading comprehension [-W]
- The Wilson Reading System shows potentially positive effects on alphabetics for beginning readers, based on a single randomized controlled trial [+W]
- The evidence base for the Wilson Reading System in beginning reading is small, with no studies addressing general reading achievement [~W]
- Word attack gains from the Wilson Reading System were concentrated among students with high initial word attack or vocabulary scores and students not eligible for free/reduced lunch [~W]
