Description¶
The review identifies five interrelated gaps across methodological, contextual, population, technological, and theoretical dimensions and highlights "the need for longitudinal designs, triangulated WTC measures, diverse learner samples, comparative AI tool research, pedagogically guided AI integration, and dynamic, theory-driven integrated models". These directions aim to advance evidence-based AI integration for enhancing EFL learners' WTC and provide guidance for teachers, curriculum designers, and AI developers.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Researchers and designers should address the identified methodological, contextual, population, technological, and theoretical gaps when studying or deploying AI for WTC
Constraints¶
- Current evidence is concentrated in Asian EFL contexts, university-level samples, and generative AI chatbots, limiting generalizability of existing findings
Target Learners¶
- EFL learners across age groups and proficiency levels
Target Learning Goals¶
- L2 willingness to communicate
- evidence-based AI integration in EFL teaching
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- Teachers cultivate approach-oriented goals and help students manage AI-feedback anxiety in AI-assisted language learning
- Future research should pursue the directions the authors outline for L2 anxiety research
- SLA researchers should make future research more contextualised, theoretically broader, methodologically wider, and involve teachers
