SLA researchers should make future research more contextualised, theoretically broader, methodologically wider, and involve teachers¶

Description¶
Nunan proposes five key points for future classroom-oriented SLA research: more contextualised (classroom-based rather than classroom-oriented) research, extended theoretical bases, a wider range of research tools and methods, re-evaluation of the process/product distinction, and a more active role for classroom practitioners. He argues researchers should investigate "real behaviour in real classrooms" and adopt methods from content classroom research such as verbal protocols, stimulated recall and case studies.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Research must be carried out in intact classrooms rather than laboratory, simulated or naturalistic settings for the contextualisation point to apply
Constraints¶
- Nunan notes generalisation from classroom research is limited: any generalization is a working hypothesis, not a conclusion, when local conditions are given proper weight
Target Learners¶
- second and foreign language learners in classrooms
Target Learning Objectives¶
- second language acquisition
