Description¶
The treatment teaching across ten 40-minute lessons operationalized the patterns of variation. In the contrast lessons, "The teacher showed responses illustrating zero to three alternations of points of view, comparing them in order to highlight for the students how they differed in terms of number of alternations of points of view" on the same task. A reinforcement exercise had students estimate the number of alternating points of view in further responses. Lessons 4–7 implemented generalization across all three tasks, with students themselves sorting responses by number of alternations; lessons 8–9 reinforced both patterns with additional responses.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers prepared through three two-hour teacher-researcher meetings introducing variation theory and the material
Constraints¶
- Implementation fidelity was checked via teacher survey; the article reports high fidelity but does not generalise the sequence beyond this setting
Target Learners¶
- 9th grade social studies students
Target Learning Goals¶
- Discerning and using alternation of points of view on societal issues
Affordances¶
- Variation Theory Learning Teaching
Claims¶
- Variation-theory-based teaching produces significantly larger gains than control teaching in 9th-grade students' alternations of points of view on a taught societal issue [+W]
- Variation-theory-based teaching significantly improves students' alternation of points of view on novel, untaught societal issues (transfer), with smaller effects than on the taught task [+W]
