Design OEP for accessibility and marginalized participation rather than open for all¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article recommends that open educators make their work more accessible to those with lower bandwidth, e.g. "by deemphasizing high quality video and synchronicity, or at least providing recordings or transcripts" and by creating work that is translatable or translated, and enhance participation of marginalized groups. It cautions that projects emphasizing open for all may not meet the needs of those farthest from justice.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Creators must attend to digital infrastructure and bandwidth constraints, language of participation, and informed choice about public visibility
Constraints¶
- Creators of OEP do not necessarily have the means or social capital to address the root causes of these injustices
Target Learners¶
- learners and educators with limited bandwidth, non-English speakers, and marginalized populations
Target Learning Goals¶
- equitable participation in open education
Related Strategies¶
- Adapt DL2F to local context by aligning with the national curriculum, using authentic local materials, multilingual approaches, and pragmatic low-bandwidth technology integration
- Consider Socio-Cultural Factors
- Design systems to accommodate low bandwidth limitations by using fewer graphics and media
