Description

In the first DLG implementation in a public special school, teachers developed concrete adaptations to make dialogic reading possible: they "chose adapted versions of universal literature books that incorporated a wealth of vocabulary and best met their students' needs", adapted books using pictograms, laminated pages, tied books to tables, pre-prepared each student's intervention, used direct questions to motivate participation, placed role-model peers near students with behavioural problems, and explicitly taught the principles of dialogic learning as rules with accessible visual material. These strategies made DLGs feasible for students aged 6–21 with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities.
