Convene cross-sector stakeholders in a structured eight-step process to co-develop practice-driven, equity-centered R&D agendas¶

Description¶
The article describes a full-day convening process with eight steps: inviting a range of experts, preparing participants, facilitating equity talks, unpacking the challenge, thinking with research, closing the gaps, critically reflecting, and synthesizing learnings. The goal was 'to define and test a collaborative process for developing practice-driven, equity-centered R&D agendas' that centers on-the-ground educators' equity challenges rather than researcher-defined priorities. District teams from four states contributed contextual data and artifacts to anchor the discussions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- District teams able to articulate a specific equity challenge within the topic area and contribute relevant data and artifacts
- A range of cross-sector participants including teachers, coaches, district leaders, researchers, funders, and product developers
Constraints¶
- The process was piloted as a one-day convening on two topics only; the authors note the resulting ideas were 'still complex and messy' and required post-convening synthesis and additional feedback rounds
Target Learners¶
- K-12 students, particularly marginalized learners including Black and Latinx students, students experiencing poverty or trauma, students with learning differences, and English learners
Target Learning Goals¶
- Equity-centered improvement of instructional programs in adolescent literacy and computational thinking
Related Strategies¶
- Open convenings with equity sentence stems and equity champion keynotes to build trust and shared commitment
- Inclusive Innovation Process
- Change stakeholder roles and investments so marginalized participants can engage as co-experts in R&D
