Teachers ensure even delegation of construction responsibilities in making teams¶

Description¶
Because possession of particular tools, such as shaping materials, "could... give the user the authority to control team activities", the article recommends that "teachers should ensure that the construction responsibilities are delegated evenly and provide everyone a chance to participate in joint fabrication work." This is an implementable facilitation move for open-ended making projects where participation is otherwise uneven. It complements other facilitation duties the article lists: sparking initial interest, introducing tools and materials, modeling, and assisting students through frustrating moments.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- the teacher facilitates teamwork and monitors who holds tools and performs fabrication tasks
Constraints¶
- roles may legitimately vary across the project and some students may lead at times, so even delegation does not mean identical roles
Target Learners¶
- adolescent student teams in collaborative making projects
Target Learning Goals¶
- equal participation in fabrication
- shared ownership of the co-invention
Claims¶
- Off-task activity appeared more common in the larger six-to-seven-member teams than in the compact teams, though not in every larger team [~M] (participation is harder to keep even in larger teams)
- Successful seventh-grade co-invention teams spent a much larger share of their embodied making actions on model making and experimenting than the unsuccessful team [+M]
Related Strategies¶
- Collaborative making project pattern: multi-material, digitally enhanced, holistic, thematically anchored: the collaborative making project this facilitation move belongs to
