Build the vigilance disposition through an AI partnership whose support is faded as the learner takes over evaluation¶

Description¶
The paper's closing recommendation is to develop the vigilance disposition through a partnership whose support is gradually faded as the learner takes the evaluation over, rather than leaving the disposition to the learner's own monitoring. The governing rule for any delegation is that "what is handed over is never the exercise the lesson exists to provide": when the goal is producing, the learner derives and the AI moves to the feedback side, whose verdicts the same vigilance must judge.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Instruction must actively build the disposition, since the lapse of unscrutinized acceptance is invisible from inside the learner's own monitoring.
Constraints¶
- Judging and producing are different capacities, each built by exercising it; delegating production forfeits practice of the producing capacity.
Target Learners¶
- K-12 and university science students
Target Learning Goals¶
- calibrated epistemic vigilance
- integrated conceptual science knowledge
Affordances¶
- Calibrated Epistemic Vigilance Framework
Related Strategies¶
- Regulate fading rate per learner, distinguishing perceived fading rate (teacher-set) from actual fading rate (child-set)
- Use AI automated feedback tools to foster students' dispositions for partnering with teachers around feedback
