Description¶
The review's concluding recommendation set for training programs that use SBLEs to build palliative and EOL communication competencies. The authors "recommend this evidence be augmented by training programs that utilize SBLEs through (1) applying standards, (2) clearly specifying goals and objectives, (3) integrating externally validated scenarios, and (4) employing rigorous evaluation methods and measures that link the SBLE to the training objectives and desired clinician practice behaviors and patient outcomes." Each recommendation is elaborated in the Discussion, e.g., endorsing NLN and INACSL standards and consulting validated scenario banks before building scenarios from scratch.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Clearly articulated communication objectives so the degree to which the objective has been met can be determined
- Scenarios must include content that allows assessment of relevant objectives
Constraints¶
- None of the 30 reviewed articles referenced the INACSL standards first published in 2011
Target Learners¶
- nursing students
- practicing nurses and clinicians
Target Learning Goals¶
- palliative and end-of-life communication competencies
Claims¶
- Debriefing was a central element of nearly all reviewed palliative/EOL communication SBLEs, but methods varied widely [~W]
- Pre-post evaluations in reviewed SBLE studies report significant gains in EOL knowledge and attitudes, but not uniformly across studies [+W]
- A simulation-based group showed stronger emotional and clinical preparedness and knowledge-to-practice conversion than a seminar-based comparison group [+W]
