Description¶
Individual rotation is a blended learning model in which each student follows an individually assigned, often algorithm-generated, schedule or playlist that rotates among learning modalities — online adaptive software, teacher-led small-group instruction, collaborative activities, and independent work. Unlike Station Rotation, the rotation is customized per learner rather than fixed for the whole class; unlike Flipped Classroom, it governs the entire learning pathway rather than the homework/class split.
Design Implications¶
Individual rotation operationalizes personalization by matching modality and pacing to current learner needs, drawing on evidence that adaptive systems can improve outcomes when they target instruction to demonstrated mastery Adaptive learning improves outcomes. [+M]. Its effectiveness depends less on the rotation mechanic itself than on the quality of the diagnostic data driving assignments and the coherence of the offline components Blended and online learning shows moderate positive effects when it combines online personalization with teacher-led interaction. [+M].
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A reliable diagnostic or adaptive platform that generates meaningful per-learner pathways (Adaptive Difficulty, Adaptive Mastery Learning)
- Teacher capacity to run concurrent small-group instruction while most students work independently
- Clear learner-facing playlists so students know what to do without constant direction (Clear Structure)
- Frequent data check-ins to verify the algorithm's recommendations against teacher judgment (Check-In)
Constraints¶
- Screen time can crowd out the teacher-led and collaborative modalities that drive deeper learning; rotations dominated by software show weaker effects Blended learning effects depend on the balance and quality of modalities, not technology alone. [~M]
- Younger learners and those with weak self-regulation struggle to manage independent rotation segments without heavy structure Self-regulated learning strategies improve achievement, but learners must be taught them explicitly. [+M]
- Poorly calibrated diagnostics produce mis-sequenced playlists that waste time or frustrate learners [-M]
- Implementation costs (devices, licenses, scheduling) are high, and effects shrink when fidelity is low Large personalized-learning implementations show wide variation in outcomes tied to implementation fidelity. [~M]
Implementation Variability¶
- Algorithm-driven: platform (e.g., adaptive math software) assigns the next activity; teacher intervenes on flagged students
- Teacher-curated playlists: teacher builds weekly playlists from assessment data, using software as one station among several
- Student-choice hybrid: learners choose the order of required modalities within constraints, adding Choice Boards to build autonomy Autonomy supports intrinsic motivation. [+M]
Target Learners¶
- K–12 learners in mixed-readiness classrooms where whole-class pacing fits no one
- Learners with gaps who need targeted remediation before grade-level work
- Less effective without support for students with weak executive function or self-regulation Self-regulated learning strategies improve achievement, but learners must be taught them explicitly. [+M]
Target Learning Goals¶
- Procedural fluency and skill mastery at variable paces (math facts, phonics, language practice)
- Mastery-based progression through sequenced content (Mastery Learning)
- Developing learner self-management of a personal workflow
Instructions¶
- Diagnose each learner's current level with an adaptive assessment (Assessment).
- Generate or curate an individual playlist spanning at least three modalities: adaptive online practice, teacher-led small group, and collaborative or offline application (Practice).
- Launch the rotation; students move through their own sequence, not a shared schedule.
- Pull small groups based on live data flags while others work independently.
- Review playlist completion and mastery data daily; adjust the next cycle (Assessment for Learning) Assessment for learning improves achievement. [+S].
Related Strategies¶
- Station Rotation — same mechanic, shared schedule; the simpler baseline model
- Flipped Classroom — rotates content delivery and application, but uniformly for the class
- Lab Rotation — rotates to a fixed location rather than an individual schedule
- Implement Math 180 as a blended rotation model with 1:1 computer use during rotation and roughly half the class on software at a time
- Blend virtual ed-tech practice with regular in-person meetings and check-ins in summer learning programs
Examples¶
- Teach to One — a math program that generates a daily individualized schedule for each student across teacher-led, collaborative, and online modalities; the canonical individual-rotation implementation.
- Khan Academy mastery playlists — teachers assign personalized practice sequences that students rotate through during independent blocks.
- Rocketship Public Schools — learning labs with adaptive software combined with teacher-led Humanities blocks, an early large-scale individual rotation model.
