Teach mediation literacy and redesign assessment and evaluation to measure interaction, not only satisfaction¶

Description¶
Beyond generic AI literacy, the article argues "Education-abroad students need a further capability: recognising what part of an encounter AI is performing, whether the task is administrative or educational, how much interpretive agency is being transferred". Assessment should examine the interpretive process — comparison of initial and revised interpretations, analysis of AI-generated cultural explanations, evidence gathered through direct interaction — with disclosure of how mediation occurred. Programme evaluation should record whether AI use changed the frequency and quality of host-community interaction rather than treating satisfaction as the principal measure.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Pre-departure orientation should ask students to classify realistic scenarios by friction type and mediation level; programmes should publish human escalation routes for safety, compliance and distress matters
Constraints¶
- AI should not be treated as authoritative for visa or immigration compliance, medical emergencies, personal safety, discrimination reporting, legal obligations or acute psychological distress
Target Learners¶
- education-abroad students
- faculty and cultural mentors
- programme evaluators
Target Learning Goals¶
- mediation literacy
- reflective judgement
- tolerance for ambiguity
- host-community interaction quality
Related Strategies¶
- Prepare-participate-reflect sequence with a mediation log for AI use in education abroad
- Institutional governance should establish practical conditions supporting AI literacy, learner agency, and critical evaluation rather than relying on prohibition and detection
