Prepare-participate-reflect sequence with a mediation log for AI use in education abroad¶

Description¶
The article recommends structuring AI use as "a prepare-participate-reflect sequence": use AI to identify vocabulary, possible questions and areas of uncertainty; engage directly with the relevant person or setting wherever reasonably possible; then compare expectations, the actual encounter and the system's earlier assumptions. A brief mediation log records the situation, why AI was used, what role it performed, whether a human interaction followed, and what was accepted or questioned.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Educator capacity depends on their own confidence with the systems, which reviews find uneven and shaped by institutional support, making this a staff-development question as well
Constraints¶
- The mediation log is metacognitive, making invisible mediation visible, and should not become surveillance or a tally of prohibited uses
Target Learners¶
- education-abroad students, especially those who would otherwise not participate due to anxiety
Target Learning Goals¶
- host-community interaction
- metacognitive awareness of AI mediation
- communicative risk-taking
Related Strategies¶
- Teach mediation literacy and redesign assessment and evaluation to measure interaction, not only satisfaction
- Use a triadic guiding-question checklist to design and reflect on adult learning activities across preparation, performance and reflection
