Research opportunities leveraging open materials: district adoption models and customizing materials for specific student populations¶

Description¶
The paper illustrates two research opportunities that leverage OpenSciEd's unique affordances. The first investigates district adoption models: how districts adapt materials, whether adaptations preserve integrity to distinctive principles, and which teacher-to-teacher supports succeed. The second asks how student materials can be customized "to support these student populations" such as dual language learners or students with disabilities, what supports teachers need, and whether customizations improve student outcomes. Both bridge multiple levels of the ecosystem and connect to equitable outcomes.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Open materials invite instructional designers to develop supports for specific student populations
Constraints¶
- A major challenge for customized materials is maintaining integrity to the OpenSciEd model
Target Learners¶
- dual language learners, students with disabilities, and students in adopting districts
Target Learning Goals¶
- equitable science learning, autonomy, and engagement
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- System-level adoption strategies: state officer collaborations, certified PD provider network, and district phased-implementation support
- Support teachers to customize curriculum for local relevance and cultural responsiveness
