System-level adoption strategies: state officer collaborations, certified PD provider network, and district phased-implementation support¶

Description¶
The paper describes three ways OpenSciEd works with district and state partners to align with system change models. OpenSciEd leaders "work directly with state education officers who provide insights into how materials and opportunities for teacher learning can best align with existing systems." It is developing a system of professional learning providers certified via micro-credentials to ensure consistency across facilitators, and it works directly with districts on gradually phasing units into existing curricula, securing professional learning time, and setting up PLCs or coaching.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Districts need support to provide teachers sufficient professional learning time and support systems such as PLCs or coaching
Constraints¶
- Preliminary studies with OpenSciEd do not currently address system-level components; teachers new to OpenSciEd cannot implement a full year of curriculum right away
Target Learners¶
- District and state science education leaders and PD facilitators
Target Learning Goals¶
- building district and state capacity to adopt and sustain OpenSciEd instruction
