Design GenAI learning activities that position GenAI as a collaborator to support the full metacognitive chain¶

Description¶
The article's findings motivate designing tasks in which students exchange ideas with GenAI and build on its input rather than outsourcing work to it. Only the Collaborator group showed the complete significant sequence across all six metacognitive categories, and its M4–M5 (0.39) and M5–M6 (0.27) connections were "by far the strongest across all groups and all node pairs". Activities should therefore require students to share their own ideas, request GenAI's perspective, monitor and evaluate outputs, and extend ideas, echoing participant P12's practice of going "back and discuss the plan with it further".
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Tasks must require students to retain cognitive ownership and exchange ideas with GenAI rather than copy-and-paste prompts
- Learners need opportunities to follow up on GenAI output with monitoring, evaluation, and elaborative extensions
Constraints¶
- The article's evidence is observational and retrospective with 24 undergraduates; extrinsic, task-completion contexts rarely produced collaborator-style engagement (4.9% of extrinsic logs)
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate students using GenAI for learning
Target Learning Goals¶
- Higher-order metacognitive engagement (monitoring, evaluation, elaboration)
- Collaborative knowledge construction with generative AI
