Description¶
The article develops a four-category taxonomy of the functional roles students assign to GenAI in authentic interaction. It extends the tripartite Instructor–Collaborator–Tool taxonomy of Ouyang and Jiao (2021) by splitting the Tool category using Fügener et al.'s augmentation–automation distinction. As the article states, "When GenAI was used to reduce cognitive load, extend the student's capabilities, or assist with tasks the student could not accomplish independently, the role was coded as Enhancement Tool", whereas a Replacement Tool substitutes for the student's own thinking. Roles were coded per interaction log from log content plus retrospective accounts.
Accounts¶
- Four-role taxonomy of GenAI roles: instructor, enhancement tool, replacement tool, collaborator: The article develops a four-category taxonomy of the functional roles students assign to GenAI in authentic interaction. Claims¶
- Motivational orientation is strongly associated with the role students assign to GenAI: intrinsically motivated students most often position it as an instructor, extrinsically motivated students as a replacement tool [+M]
- Perceived GenAI role is systematically associated with metacognitive dimensions activated: replacement-tool users show no evaluation or elaboration, collaborator users show predominantly higher-order activity [+M]
- Only the Collaborator group shows a complete significant sequential metacognitive chain from orientation through elaboration; the Replacement Tool group shows only self-loops [+M]
