Description¶
When parents of top performers objected that peer assistance wasted their children's time, the teacher presented research that "reciprocal teaching benefits both tutors and tutees equally", provided step-by-step training in peer-teaching strategies, had struggling students such as Baobei tutor peers after mastering corrections, and invited sceptical parents to try reciprocal teaching at home. Even the strongest doubters changed their minds after trying it with their children.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Step-by-step student training in effective peer-teaching strategies during practice lessons and after class
- Direct explanation of the reciprocal-teaching rationale to parents, including home practice with their own children
Constraints¶
- Other teachers at the school struggled to implement reciprocal teaching; some abandoned peer assistance to avoid conflict with parents
Target Learners¶
- elementary students across performance levels, with struggling students acting as tutors after mastering content
Target Learning Goals¶
- peer tutoring and communication skills
- confidence and mastery of taught content
- parental trust in inclusive practices
Claims¶
- Parental attitudes transformed from scepticism to high trust over the three cycles, with parents of low performers developing high confidence by Cycle 3 [+W]
- The class achieved the highest average score in the unified Grade 3a EFL exam among seven classes, and its average moved from just above the second-highest class in Cycle 2 to four points higher in Cycle 3 [+W]
- Student engagement increased across all performance levels over three DBR cycles, with low-performing students moving from 7–10 teacher prompts per lesson to 95–100% sustained attention by Cycle 3 [+W]
- Reading proficiency improved across all performance groups, with low performers reaching Grade 3b reading standards and top performers reaching Grade 6a–7a levels by Cycle 3 [+W]
