Extend simulated teaching practice to student assessment and teacher screening uses¶

Description¶
Beyond training, the authors propose two implementable uses: assigning simulated sections to students, where guiding agents to a solution may reveal the user's own understanding of material, and using EducaSim as one step in screening teachers for online courses. Because current asynchronous screenings are "vulnerable to Generative AI simply doing the work", tuning agents with personality randomness could yield non-uniform experiences with more distinct markers, such as time spent per utterance, for potential dishonesty.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Assessment and screening uses presuppose that interaction quality reflects the user's understanding, which the authors frame as a possibility based on prior human-to-human work
Constraints¶
- The screening use case is speculative: the article presents it as a potential step, not a validated measure
Target Learners¶
- CS1 students; applicants to teach online courses
Target Learning Goals¶
- Gauging understanding through teaching; evaluating online teaching readiness
Related Strategies¶
- Educasim Simulated Section Teacher Practice Tool
- Use simulated student sections as a scalable supplement to teacher training and lesson preparation
- Role Play
- Have students develop and train AI agents and simulations in the domains they are learning, with validation and scaffolding
- Use unlearning-based simulated students as scalable practice environments for teacher professional development
