Use simulated student sections as a scalable supplement to teacher training and lesson preparation¶

Description¶
The authors recommend deploying simulated small-group sections as a supplement to traditional teacher training in large online courses such as Code in Place or Schoolhouse, where scaling live coaching is hard. Simulations "can serve as high-frequency training that leaves more time for feedback iteration between follow-up synchronous sessions with coaches", and teachers can also rehearse upcoming lessons to refresh understanding and engagement strategies before teaching.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The simulation environment resembles online teaching contexts, which may be text-based with fewer physical cues
Constraints¶
- Learning from practice depends on experience and uptake of the generated feedback; some instructors may need more structured experiences such as in-session hints or specific scenarios
Target Learners¶
- Volunteer and novice teachers in massive online courses
Target Learning Goals¶
- Practicing lesson delivery, anticipating student questions, and refining engagement strategies
Related Strategies¶
- Educasim Simulated Section Teacher Practice Tool
- Extend simulated teaching practice to student assessment and teacher screening uses
- Use unlearning-based simulated students as scalable practice environments for teacher professional development
- Use ANN-based adaptive feedback to provide scalable, process-oriented real-time feedback at scale in higher education
