Description¶
During DBR refinement, when students "relied heavily on AI-generated responses and accepted recommendations without sufficient verification," the design team added prompts requiring comparison of AI outputs with psychological theories and course materials. Later refinements clarified role descriptions, introduced structured reflective prompts when reflections remained largely descriptive, and increased emphasis on collaborative discussion and justification of intervention decisions to promote context-sensitive professional reasoning.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- An orientation on responsible AI use covering data privacy, ethical considerations, and independent professional judgment before the intervention
Constraints¶
- Refinements were made within a single eight-week DBR intervention in gifted-education coursework; the article does not claim effectiveness beyond this setting
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate pre-service educational psychologists using generative AI in coursework
Target Learning Goals¶
- Critical evaluation of AI-generated information
- Context-sensitive professional reasoning
- Deeper reflective engagement
Affordances¶
Claims¶
Related Strategies¶
- Engage students in active learning assignments using generative AI with structured reflection and critique of AI outputs
- Embed metacognitive scaffolds in GenAI search systems — prompting sub-question formulation, guiding output comparison, and encouraging reflection on AI-user knowledge discrepancies
- Integrate LLM-based CRP support tools within professional development to encourage teacher reflection beyond template-based outputs
- Embed verification cycles and faded prompt scaffolding into GenAI-supported STEAM tasks
