Description¶
User- and community-centered design is one of three methodological advances the report highlights, defined as "Engaging users and community members in the design process to make learning tools more attractive, useful, and effective." The report frames this as consistent with its equity commitment that involving diverse people and perspectives in the early stages of research and design enables researchers to address equity issues. It is presented as a method cyberlearning researchers use to study and improve learning designs.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Early and sustained involvement of users and community members throughout the design process
Constraints¶
- The report presents this as a methodological advance of the cyberlearning community rather than a tested intervention with printed effect sizes
Target Learners¶
- diverse learners and communities, including underrepresented groups
Target Learning Goals¶
- designing learning technologies that are attractive, useful, and effective for their intended users
Related Strategies¶
- Center co-design with teachers and students throughout AI tool R&D, using human-in-the-loop workflows as a primary risk mitigation
- Seven IUX methodologies for centering learners in LER technology development
- Design Thinking
