Seven IUX methodologies for centering learners in LER technology development¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The toolkit recommends seven methodologies it has used to design LER technologies inclusively: community advisory boards, usability testing, surveys and questionnaires, empathy and user journey mapping, co-design and participatory workshops, and interviews and focus groups. Each is given a purpose, implementation tip, and example; for instance, usability testing should "Conduct sessions in multiple accessible settings such as libraries." These methods involve learners directly so their "diverse needs, experiences, and goals are reflected."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Recruiting diverse participants, especially marginalized groups, and inclusive formats
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- learners, workers, and employers interacting with LER technologies
Target Learning Goals¶
- accessible, relevant, and practical LER technologies shaped by learner input
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- Establish formal, compensated worker advisory councils and co-design teams in skills-first system design
- Severity scale for prioritizing learner barriers into design actions
- Inclusive Innovation Process
- Use this Toolkit: Mitigating Racial Bias in Edtech
- Engage users and community members in the design process to make learning tools more attractive, useful, and effective
- Five-step iterative co-design process for developing edtech evaluation criteria with learners and vendors
- Six-step design methodology: elicit values, minimal intervention, multi-level multi-outcome evaluation, iterate, simulate scale, sunset
