Three-stage model of developing district computational thinking pathways: Getting Started, Getting Going, Getting Better¶

Description¶
The presentation proposes a three-stage developmental model for how a district CT pathway matures. In Getting Started, the "District has CT activity and local expertise, but little consistency, cumulativity, etc."; in Getting Going there is "wide buy-in to a progression that is cumulative, consistent, competency-based"; in Getting Better there is "wide implementation with metrics" and the district "knows where improvement is needed next." Each stage is paired with verbs such as Informing, Exploring, Committing, Documenting, Communicating, Leading, Implementing, Improving, and Seeing results.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- District-wide buy-in and a cumulative, consistent, competency-based progression are needed to move beyond the Getting Started stage
Constraints¶
- The model describes district-level pathway development over multiple school years (SY19-20 through SY21-22), not single-classroom adoption
Target Learners¶
- K-8 students in rural districts
Target Learning Objectives¶
- computational thinking
- computer science
- coding
Claims¶
Related Theories¶
- Four interrelated factors drive progression between developmental stages: maturation, experience, social interaction, and equilibration
- Tools, Themes, and Competencies framework for organizing a CT/CS pathway
- Culturally sustaining pedagogy as a fourth 'C' in computing education pathways
- Six R&D practice dimensions (strategy, structure, intensity, spread, engagement, evidence) with a four-stage Nascent-to-Sustaining rubric
Examples¶
- Sequence pathway development activities across three years: buy-in, SCRIPT assessment and summer institutes led by model-district teachers, then piloting with microcredentials
- CT Pathways Toolkit for district design of K-12 CS/CT pathways
- Commit at the district level to computing pathways that are cumulative, consistent, and competency-based across K-12 schools
