Description¶
The article presents dialogism as Bakhtin's appropriation and reinterpretation of Kantian architectonics. Holquist is quoted describing dialogism as "a form of architectonics, a general science of ordering parts into a whole." For Bakhtin, the space between minds and the world is dialogic rather than technical and systematized; dialogue is the interrelation of utterances that integrates continuously across differences, and texts are foundational for the disciplines. The article uses dialogism as its theoretical framework for reexamining integration in interdisciplinary education.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Accepts Bakhtin's premise that language is essential to how humans construct knowledge about the world, others, and themselves
Constraints¶
- Bakhtin accepts Kant's belief in an unbridgeable gap between mind and world but shifts focus to socio-historical interrelations
Target Learners¶
- college and university students
- educators and interdisciplinarians in higher education
Target Learning Objectives¶
- integrating knowledge across disciplinary boundaries through dialogic, text-mediated processes
Claims¶
