Two-category taxonomy of requirements for DLPs as research infrastructure: expected technical work versus emerging organizational and community work¶
Theory · All theories
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The paper organizes infrastructure-building work into two kinds: (1) expected technical platform modifications (data enhancement and documentation, content authoring, privacy, experimental apparatus, student user experience) and (2) emergent organizational and community work that was less salient. The authors state, "Specifically, this paper articulates two kinds of infrastructure-building work: (1) the work SEERNet members expected and (2) the emergent work that was either less salient or not as obvious." Table 1 lists the eleven requirements across the two categories.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A multi-platform initiative with platform teams, research teams, and a coordinating hub to identify and share both categories of requirements
Constraints¶
- Derived from three years of SEERNet experience with twelve separately funded teams; the authors frame it as reflections on lessons learned rather than tested findings
Target Learners¶
- educational researchers using digital learning platforms
Target Learning Objectives¶
- conducting rigorous experimental research on digital learning platforms
Claims¶
Related Theories¶
- SEERNet's framework of Digital Learning Platforms as research infrastructure for education research
- Four foundational developments framework for DLPs-as-research-infrastructure
Examples¶
- SEERNet shared digital learning platform infrastructure enabling a performer community model
- Grow a peer review community that understands the affordances and limits of DLP-based research
- Use a two-phase feasibility process — a pre-submission platform feasibility letter and a post-award six-month feasibility phase — before research funds are committed
