Description¶
KCLS is a content-free, step-by-step structural approach to cooperative learning consisting of "contemporary psycho-social behaviours with social interaction sequences which can transform teaching". It organises social interaction in the classroom through simple stepwise structures (e.g., Rally Robin, Round Robin, Mix Pair Share, Inside-Outside Circle, Numbered Head Together) and is designed to increase student engagement and cooperation, usable at all grade levels with any curriculum. Its principles include positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal participation, and simultaneous interaction (PIES).
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers require training in the structures and their interaction sequences, as delivered in the MoE 5-day transformative pedagogy workshop
Constraints¶
- The article reports that implementation is challenged by large class size, small classroom space, vast syllabus, and student reluctance at higher secondary level
Target Learners¶
- Grade 11 and 12 students in Bhutanese higher secondary schools
Target Learning Objectives¶
- Student engagement and cooperation
- Academic achievement
- Social skills development
