Three-perspective bibliometric mapping for locating emerging research subfields¶
Theory · All theories
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article presents a combined bibliometric approach in which "coauthorship analysis reveals social ties and bridges, bibliographic coupling shows shared intellectual foundations, and semantic similarity uncovers related work outside existing citation networks." It is intended for subfields that lack a dedicated journal, conference, or society, using an open-submission workshop as a seed corpus. The authors offer it as proof of concept for community-building, demonstrating "how bibliometric techniques can be used in service of solidifying and growing emerging subfields of research."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A seed set of publications and people, such as an open-submission workshop, since emerging subfields lack a clear scholarly home
Constraints¶
- The article states the analyses are "exploratory and limited in both scope and depth" and that the seed workshop does not necessarily represent the distributed community
Target Learners¶
- education researchers
- learning engineering practitioners
- funders and network organizers
Target Learning Objectives¶
- mapping the people, publications, and ideas of an emerging research subfield to support community-building
