Tomlinson 2026¶
Tomlinson, B., Black, R.W., Patterson, D.J., van der Hoek, A., Ferguson, J. & Bietz, M.J. (2026). Students prefer personalized, AI-generated educational videos over non-personalized, human-recorded videos. Scientific Reports 16:21804. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-52798-9

End-of-term ranking survey in two offerings of a large online undergraduate course (493 respondents of 534 enrolled, 92.3% response rate). Post-hoc pairwise Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with Bonferroni correction showed AI-generated personalized videos were "significantly lower (more preferred)" than human-recorded non-personalized videos.
"Across both cohorts, AI-generated personalized videos received a significantly lower (more preferred) average rank than human-recorded non-personalized videos (mean rank 2.26 vs. 2.69; Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p< 0.001)."

- Mean rank ordering of the four video types was stable across both course offerings, with hypothetical human-recorded personalized videos ranked highest and AI-generated non-personalized lowest — related
- Students preferred human-recorded over AI-generated videos when personalization was held constant, but this effect was smaller than the personalization effect — reports the opposite
- Nearly nine in ten students ranked a personalized video as their top choice — related
- In blind A/B comparison, raters prefer personalised (Adaptive) questions over non-personalised (Random-topic) questions about 68–69% of the time in Biology and Chemistry — related
- Students oppose preferring AI videos over instructor-recorded videos and distrust AI video information as much as human-presented information — reports the opposite
- Test-takers rate LLM-generated feedback as persuasive and useful as human instructor feedback (Wilcoxon signed-rank tests show no significant difference) — related
