Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i0 With covariates controlled and both predictors entered simultaneously, ANS acuity was not related to algebra achievement (β = .012), but frequency of retrieval errors was (β = .263). → Geary David C. 2015

Regression predicting algebra achievement in the 171-student sample. Although both ANS acuity and retrieval errors correlated with algebra scores (Table 1), only retrieval errors remained significant after covariate control; the ANS coefficient was negligible (β = .012) and the null means no detected relation, not tested equivalence.
"However, with control of the covariates and simultaneous entry of both of these predictors, ANS acuity was not related to algebra achievement (β = .012, p=.8554), but frequency of retrieval errors was (β = .263, p<.0001)."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Arithmetic Fact Retrieval — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Long-Term Memory — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Number Sense — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- ANS acuity correlates with later number sets fluency but does not emerge as a unique predictor once symbolic knowledge is controlled — related
- ANS acuity predicts accuracy of coordinate plane placements and expression evaluation accuracy, but not equation memory, in 9th graders — related
- Frequency of addition fact-retrieval errors predicts poor algebra equation memory but not coordinate plane or expression evaluation performance — related
- Each of the three algebraic cognition measures independently predicts algebra achievement, controlling demographic and domain-general covariates — related
