Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i? After controls, frequency of memory-retrieval errors predicted algebra equation memory (β = .250) but was unrelated to coordinate plane PAE, expression evaluation RT, or accuracy. → Geary David C. 2015

Regression analysis in the same 171-student sample testing whether 8th-grade addition fact retrieval errors predicted 9th-grade algebraic cognition. Retrieval errors "predicted algebra equation memory" (β = .250) with no relation to the other three measures; no effect size beyond the regression coefficient is printed.
"frequency of memory-retrieval errors when solving addition problems predicted algebra equation memory [β = .250, t(160) = 3.03, p=.0028], but was unrelated to PAE on the coordinate plane task [β = .054, t(160) < 1, p=.3817], or expression evaluation RT [β = .055, t(160) < 1, p=.4771] or accuracy [β = .075, t(160) = 1.02, p=.3080]."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Arithmetic Fact Retrieval — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Long-Term Memory — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- ANS acuity predicts accuracy of coordinate plane placements and expression evaluation accuracy, but not equation memory, in 9th graders — related
- ANS acuity is not related to algebra achievement once covariates are controlled, whereas retrieval errors remain predictive — related
- Coordinate plane placement accuracy shows no x- versus y-axis difference; quadrant errors are driven by sign transpositions in a small subset of students — related
- Each of the three algebraic cognition measures independently predicts algebra achievement, controlling demographic and domain-general covariates — related
